One of the biggest things to ever come out of the Autodesk Labs - Interactive Terrain Shaping. Do grading like never before! This technology represents the realisation of the grading dream - create a multitude of interactive gradings representing just about any surface shape you can concieve. This is a very graphical and interactive design tool that everyone should check out!
Watch a video overview.
Here is what Autodesk Labs have to say about the Interactive Terrain Shaping tool:
The Interactive Terrain Shaping technology preview provides users with a unique workflow for developing grading proposals in AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2012 and AutoCAD® Map 3D® 2012 software. The primary goal of this effort is to provide a holistic approach to terrain shaping that allows users to go from concept to completion using the same model. The intent is to facilitate the development of comprehensive grading plans that can be easily tuned through the project cycle.
This new workflow includes:
- Purpose-built grading operations that interact with other grading objects
- Control over grading hierarchy and operations
- Direct analytical feedback including earthwork and stage-storage volumes
- Extraction of solids and Civil 3D grid surfaces
This technology preview extends AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 and AutoCAD Map 3D 2012.
The Interactive Terrain Shaping technology preview creates a new tab where you will find creation, editing and analytical commands

The latest update to Advanced Road Design, ARD 2012.01 is now available for AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 customers on 64bit or 32bit machines.
The new version of ARD has also been made available on the Civil 3D 2010 and Civil 3D 2011 platforms, both for 32 bit and 64bit machines.
As well as a number of performance improvements we have also:
- Completely updated the Help Systems (Roads, Pipes and General) to reflect the current software look and functionality, and
- Included some new data sharing tools, focused on allowing organisations to co-ordinate Road and Drainage/Sewer/Pipe projects across multiple projects. Users can now share their project data into a Share location, with other designers able to read from the Share point and reference the other project data in their project. Referenced data is 'read only' but can otherwise be used to assist in co-ordinating data and bringing disparate project data together.

Check out this Model made by SMEC
SMEC International have been using AutoCAD Civil 3D for excavation plans, and we've been lucky enough to get access to one of thier projects to show off what AutoCAD Civil 3D can do. Civil 3D has been used to create a detailed excavation plan for a power station in Africa and combines the power of feature lines, gradings and surface modelling to create a complete and easily adjustable design solution.
Phillip McDevitt, Senior Draftsperson (Hydro Power), has undertaken this design and used this project as a test case for using AutoCAD Civil 3D for a number of excavation plans over the next year.

Autodesk have released Subscription Advantage Packs for various 2010 products including AutoCAD Civil 3D.
If you are on subscription for Civil 3D 2010 you should download it from the Autodesk Subscription site.
Advantage Packs provide new functionality to Autodesk products well ahead of next year's releases. For Civil 3D users there are some significant inclusions in the advantage pack, all accessible from the Civil 3D Toolbox:

A brand new object type is included - Point Clouds. Point Cloud technology will allow you to quickly import and display millions of points - this has immediate benefits in sorting valuable point data before building a surface as well as providing a frame for establishing Data Clip Boundaries before importing points.
The Roundabout tool is great for quickly laying out your roundabout geometry directly from centreline alignments.
Some of the surface breakline tools are invaluable for surveyors wanting to sort out where breaklines are crossing.
The Create Surface from GIS Data suddenly makes it both quick and easy to create surfaces directly from GIS data.
The Visibility Check tools give you a quick 'engineering' view of the model to sort out any immediate design deficiencies.
The Best Fit tools for alignments and profiles are also worth a look.
Download it and take advantage of subscription. |

Over the last few months, we have been working closely with a number of irrigation designers to develop Site Leveller and we are proud to announce that has now been released.
Site Leveller takes advantage of Civil3D's revolutionary Surface and Grading features to allow designers to optimally re-grade irrigation bays and manage/minimise volumes including topsoil triggers for removal and reinstatement.
Designers can layout Bays from either Civil3D Feature Lines, Surfaces, or Parcels. Site Leveller is then used to ...
- Optimise volumes accounting for topsoil removal and reinstatement.
- Label all Bays across a grid showing cut/fill information.
- Output Bay Arrows, which show the grade and grade angle.
- Output detailed reports and tables.
For more information about Site Leveller and to see a video of it in action, please click here.

The next update to ARD is due out very soon and is to include Ribbons. The Ribbon interface provides a workflow focused method of accessing commands for ARD.
Also we are currently converting our software into the .net programming environment - this promises to provide significant speed and performance improvements, as well as opening up the opportunity for more features and automation. Very exciting times! We hope to have this reprogramming complete in the next few months. |

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Jan. 5, 2010 — Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) announced that it has completed the acquisition of Dynamite VSP and Dynamite SIM visualization software products and related assets. The products were purchased from 3AM Solutions, a UK-based privately owned technology company that develops visualization software for civil infrastructure. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Dynamite VSP and Dynamite SIM technology will help Autodesk automate the process of creating visualizations for projects made with AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Dynamite VSP offers simple and efficient ways to bring AutoCAD Civil 3D software data into Autodesk 3ds Max Design software.
Dynamite VSP simplifies the process of creating visualizations so that engineers can now include visualization as part of the design process. The technology links the AutoCAD Civil 3D model to the 3ds Max Design rendering, so that changes in the design model can be captured in the visualization. This enables engineers to view and optimize designs more easily by visualizing them in context.

Visualisation Made Easy - RDV
Dynamite is a high-end 3D visualisation tool - for larger organisations with a dedicated visualisation section, this is a significant acquisition by Autodesk and will enable a much more streamlined approach to visualisation from design.
For small to medium sized organisations you can't go past Rapid Design Visualisation (RDV) for getting your designs directly out into a fully rendered and interactive 3D environment. RDV offers the extra dimension of a fully inteactive 3D model enabling your customers to completely review designs, from any perspective.

The article reported on Autodesk’s announcement of acquiring certain assets from Boss International to expand its water resources analysis capabilities for the AEC industry.
The article noted that Autodesk will integrate Boss' StormNET for stormwater management analysis, RiverCAD for floodplain analysis, and WaterNET for water distribution analysis with Autodesk's model-based design solutions, including AutoCAD Civil 3D, to help engineers streamline workflows, reduce errors and boost productivity.
This is an exciting acquisition for Australian designers - the potential integration of a river floodplain analysis system inside of AutoCAD Civil 3D and a water supply design tool would be significant enhancements to the current Hydraflow extensions. There is nothing confirmed from Autodesk as to how the purchased assets will be used, how it will be integrated or how it will be made available to end customers.
Word on the street is that Hydraflow will continue to be supported and enhanced, but the Boss solution could improve design capabilities for River and Water supply systems.

Australian Drainage and Sewer Design
If you want a complete Austrailan design solution for Drainage and Sewer we continue to recommend Advanced Road Design - Pipes Module as this fully supports the current Australian design guidelines and includes publishing of long sections and schedules directly into AutoCAD and to Australian drafting standards. For high end drainage analysis you should consider using DRAINS. Queensland customers also recommend PC Drains for Queensland compliant drainage design.
